Though the incomes of Greeks have vastly shrunk in the six years of economic depression, the price of groceries in the country has continued to grow, giving Greece an unenviable first place in food price hikes in the entire 28-member EU.
According to data from Eurostat, there was a 2.9 percent hike in food prices between July and August of this year, the largest increase among all 28 EU member-states
Moreover, the data for August 2015 show a 4.2 percent increase over the same month one year ago.
Many of the increases are on food products taxed with a 13 percent VAT.
The prices of bread and cereals rose by 3.2 percent over one year, and meat products went up by 1.9 percent, again the biggest hikes in the EU.
Even higher increases were noted in oil products (9.9 percent), fruit (17.2 percent), vegetables (9.6 percent) fish (0.4 percent), while milk, eggs, and cheese products went up by 0.3 percent.
Between June and September of this year alone, the price of milk rose by 2.96 percent.
Food industry representatives in Greece attributed the large hikes to the imposition of capital controls over the summer and delays in payments owed to business by the state, which have been passed on to consumers.
