A new survey reveals more details about the psychology of trolls and personalities often hidden behind their anonymity

The survey was conducted by Erin E. Buckels and psychologists from the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg and University of British Columbia and was published in the ‘Personality and Individual Differences’ journal.

Psychologists tried to explore whether people who engage in trolling are associated with so-called Dark Quartet ( this is essentially the Dark Triad , which includes the subclinical form of sadism: the Machiavellianism ( willingness manipulation and deception of others) , narcissism ( self-absorption admiration for himself , coquetry ), the Psychopathy (absence of regret , remorse and empathy ) and as we said the sub-clinical form of sadism ( pleasure in the pain and anguish of others).

The researchers defined online trolling as “the practice of behaving in a deceptive, destructive, or disruptive manner in a social setting on the Internet” for no purpose other than their pleasure.

According to Wikipedia, a troll, in Internet slang language, is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community.

To achieve the results, the team of psychologists asked internet users several questions, including how much time they spend online, and whether they comment on websites such as YouTube.

Questions also surrounded sadistic statements including: ''I enjoy physically hurting people,” “I enjoy making jokes at the expense of others” and “I enjoy playing the villain in games and torturing other characters.”

“It was sadism, however, that had the most robust associations with trolling of any of the personality measures,” said psychologists.

The survey results are difficult to underestimate since found correlations, sometimes very strong, and between these psychological disorders and behavior that we call trolling (trolarism). Most of all, the survey tried to identify and compare between the Dark Quartet to the time a person was engaged on the internet on a daily basis.

The team concluded that those who enjoyed trolling more than other activities, such debating and making friends, had tendencies in line with the psychological “Dark Tetrad”.

Perhaps most worryingly, the psychologists based their conclusion on cyber-trolling being an “Internet manifestation of everyday sadism,” rather than merely on online phenomenon.
