A man who fits the description of a suspect thought to be the coordinator and financier of the alleged terror cells that were the subject of the recent raids in Belgium has been detained by Greek police, according to high-ranking police sources.

According to reports he and three other suspects were picked up by police in an Attica neighborhood.

Investigators have taken fingerprints, photographs and DNA samples, of the 27-year-old suspected terror ringleader and sent them to their European counterparts as part the investigation to examine whether he is indeed linked to the alleged terror rings.

The operation in Greece took place following the issuance of an international arrest warrant for the suspected coordinator of the terror cells who Belgian police say was likely in Greece.

The Flemmish broadcaster VTM reports that investigations into the suspected cell in Belgium began in the days between Christmas and New Year’s following suspicious phone-calls received by a prisoner connected to the militants who is being held in a jail near Lieges. According to VTM, the calls appear to have been made from Greece.

Police confiscated a mobile phone found on the suspect and have sought a warrant to examine the phone records to determine whether the phone was used to contact the individuals linked to the suspected terror cells in Belgium.

For the time being however police have released little other information about the suspects detained. It is not known, for example, if he was carrying any official idenity documents. The suspect being sought by the Belgian authorities is a Belgian national of Moroccan descent who is thought to have returned to Europe after fighting in Syria.
