Kammenos, leader of the right-wing junior coalition partner in Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' new government, said in a statement he had met the Russian ambassador to discuss strategic cooperation. He said he had received an invitation to Moscow but gave no other details.

Kammenos also said he had met the U.S. ambassador to Greece to discuss issues including training and procurement and had assured him that Greece would continue cooperation within NATO.

Greece has caused consternation among some European partners over its stance towards Russia, at a time of escalating tension over Ukraine. Last week, Greece complained that it wasn't consulted on a 9 month extension to the EU sanctions on Russia and even hinted at a potential veto to the decision, before it eventually agreed to a 6 month extension.

The international press is full of speculated analysis about the possibility of closer Greece - Russia ties under the new Greek administration. They point out both the ideological ties by SYRIZA members in the past (including those of Foreign minister Nikos Kotzias) and the proximity of Kammenos' junior coalition partners Independent Greeks to those of Russia.
