The latest cases of child pornography detected by police authorities has caused alarm and a worldwide investigation. The police operation dubbed “Hydra” was conducted by the Electronic Crime Squad and it was quite successful according to the official announcement.
The operation lasted seven months and aimed at the fight against possession and trafficking of online child pornography. As a result 78 users with electronic traces in 32 different countries were detected. Among them, Germany, Russia, China, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Belgium and the US.
Concerning domestic cases, three people were arrested in Attica and Ioannina. Two of them are Greek (a 25 and a 34 year old) and one is a 47 year old Bulgarian citizen. The 34 year old is charged with a P2P distribution of hardcore child porn. The 47 year old was arrested and charged with possession of big quantities of child pornographic material found in his house.
The latter is the pediatrician arrested last week in Ioannina. When the news broke, the shock made the police commissioner in charge with the case to say that he had never encountered a case with so many hardcore material in their possession. He had estimated that the pediatrician's case was unique in the history of child pornography in Europe, perhaps even worldwide.
This has been the first time an internationally coordinated pursuit of pedophilic material has ever been conducted in the country, using special software to track down the online traces. Evidence from the investigation have already been forwarded to both Europol and Interpol, so that it can be completed and possible accomplices can be found. The message Greek police authorities are sending with this case is that no pedophile will be safe from now on.
