A one-year-old boy retrieved by the coast guard was the latest victim in the enormous and mounting migration flow from Turkey to Greece.
The coast guard had identified an emergency off the coast of Sykaminia in Lesvos, and they were able to retrieve 56 passengers, including the one-year-old boy, who had lost conciousness. He was taken to Molyvos, where alerted volunteer physicians and an agricultural doctor failed in their efforts to revive the little boy.
The one-year-old was then taken by ambulance to a health centre in the town of Kalloni, where the death was simply certified.
The coast guard on Lesvos hours later engaged in two more rescue operations, one of them in Eftalou, where 48 migrants and refugees were retrieve from a sinking dinghy.
As of October 2, about 396,000 migrants and refugees have reached Greece by sea, according to the UNHCR, the UN refugee agency.
In the second operation, in the area of Lamna, beween Molyvos and Sykaminia, the coast guard were able to collect 70 migrants and refugees from a sinking dinghy.
About 2,000 migrants and refugees arrived on Lesvos between 6am Tursday and dawn today.
