In December 2012 and April 2013, containers with military equipment were found on Greek soil and confiscated. More specifically, the containers contained spare parts for F-4 Phantom aircraft, shipped from Israel and heading to Iran. The case was uncovered through a collaboration of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in collaboration with the Firearms and Narcotice bureau of the Police Financial Crime Squad (SDOE).
As was disclosed in the Greek press the parts were shipped from the town of Binyamina in Israel, to a transhipment company in Greece under the name of “Tassos Karras S.A.” based on Orfeos Street in the Votanikos neighborhood of Athens. Investigation revealed that the firm was a dummy corporation, with a contact phone number belonging to a British subject, residing in Thessaloniki, who has not been found.
According to the DHS, the effort was part of an effort by Israeli smugglers to break the arms embargo against Iran. The first shipment was discovered on 20 December 2012. SDOE, moving on a DHS request, confiscated a container in which a power system stabilizer for F-4 Phantom fighters, worth around $28,000 was found.
The second shipment was discovered in April 2013 when a container which had among items a current output sensor was found, also used on the same aircraft.
The confiscate material was turned over to the DHS for use as evidence in the case against an Israeli citizen, suspected of being behind a smuggling ring sending military equipment from Israel to Iran, and sought by US authorities since 2004.
