A fire broke out at Hellenic Petroleum's main facility outside Athens during maintenance work on Friday, injuring six workers, police said.

Hellenic Petroleum is Greece's largest refiner. The fire broke out after a blast at a unit that had been shut for maintenance, causing a big cloud of smoke, but was put out quickly. The injured workers were rushed to hospital.

"There was maintenance work in the unit when the fire broke out," Hellenic Petroleum spokesman Angelos Stranis said. "One of the six workers was seriously injured with burns."

Hellenic Petroleum does not expect the fire at a unit of its Aspropyrgos plant outside Athens on Friday to extend its maintenance shutdown, an official at the company said. The shutdown had started on April 20 and was scheduled to end at the end of this month.

"Technically, there is no reason for the completion of the shutdown to be delayed. We don't expect any impact on the group's financials," Hellenic Petroleum's communications director Makis Stanitsas told Reuters.

An investigation is under way to establish why the accident happened, while many workers have been complaining to local media that security measures in the facility were practically non existent.

The Government government appointed a new chairman and chief executive at Hellenic Petroleum this week. The company is 35% state owned.
