Top-flight Greek club OFI Crete has had six points deducted from the Greek League table, following disciplinary action demanded by football's world governing body FIFA.
The decision was implemented by Greek league organizers a day after notice was received from FIFA's disciplinary committee, backing a complaint over delayed salary payments made by 22-year-old Serbian striker Aleksandar Pesic, who was with OFI in the 2008 - 2010 seasons and currently plays for Toulouse.
The deduction drops OFI to 16th place in the 18-team league with 14 points in18 matches. Financial troubles facing the Crete-based club prompted the recent walkout of Italian international coach Gennaro Gattuso, who had already threatened to quit a few months ago.
The club has been facing fierce financial problems during the season. Lat Wednesday's game against Panaitolikos was almost postponed due to outstanding debts, which were resolved in the last minute, with contribution by former OFI player and president, Nikos Machlas. The game went ahead as planned (OFI lost 3 - 1).
Olympiacos Piraeus currently lead the Greek league with 42 points, two points ahead of PAOK Salonica and six ahead of Panathinaikos, in a fascinating championship with three close contenders.
