The referendum will take place under rules of transparency and fairness and it will ensure the citizens' massive participation with a maximum cost of 20 million Euros, said Mr. Nikos Voutsis, Minister of Internal Affairs, during a Press Conference held today, at the presence of the Deputy Minister of Administrative Reform, Mr. George Katrougalos.
An informal bipartisan committee has been established and met today with representatives from all parties including those represented in the European parliament. Mr. Voutsis also announced that "there will be no state funding to the parties involved in the referendum."
Referendum held under 'aggravating circumstances'
According to Mr. Voutsis, the referendum will be conducted under "particularly aggravating circumstances for the citizens" and efforts are being made by the ministries in order to provide facilities for those registered to vote away from where they live so they can commute with the minimum cost, by boat or by road, in order to vote."
At the same time he pointed out that there has to be a participation rate of at least 40% by registered voters in order for the referendum to be valid. "The actual population who has the right to vote is considered to be up to 8 million citizens. We demand massive participation. We'll sum up the rate of 40% by checking the electoral lists. "
Mr. Voutsis, will not participate in the political debate regarding the referendum because he has to perform his duties as the Minister of Interior Affairs.
