After a night of petrol bombs and street battles in Athens, Greek police are coming under a different sort of fire, after several videos have emerged from last night’s demonstrations in Athens that depict instances of excessive police violence and distinctly questionable tactics.
In a video released by Reuters (above) a riot police officer can be seen pummeling a handcuffed man who clearly posed no threat (at the 0.32 mark). After landing a few vicious punches and kicks on the defenseless arrestee, the officer’s colleagues restrain him – potentially merely because they were aware of cameras recording the incident.
Another video aired by MEGA TV captures a distinctly questionable moment where one riot policeman can be seen handing what looks like a petrol bomb to a colleague who plants it in a rucksack which he zips up.
Finally, another video posted by Sto Kokkino radio station and which has been commented upon widely on social media shows a large number of what appear to be policemen dressed as rioters heading towards the square in Exarheia where protesters had set up barricades.
The large group moves calmly past a line of riot policemen who look on impassively. The video appears to provide evidence of a practice long alleged by protesters, and long denied by police: that large numbers of plainclothes police officers often infiltrate the ranks of the protesters.
