Konstantopoulou elected youngest ever House president

SYRIZA MP Zoe Konstantopoulou was elected the youngest ever parliament president with the widest majority in the history of the House.

With 235 yes votes out of 298 voters, the Greek Parliament on Friday elected Zoe Konstantopoulou, a SYRIZA lawmaker, as its new speaker, based on results of a national election on January 25.

A total of 61 deputies cast a blank vote, while 2 votes were considered invalid. Two deputies - ND deputy Nikos Dendias and Golden Dawn secretary general Nikos Mihaloliakos - did not attend the voting process.

SYRIZA’s candidate President of the Parliament was also supported by junior coalition government party Independent Greeks, New Democracy, The River and socialist PASOK party.

Konstantopoulou, born in Athens in 1976, was expected to be win the parliamentary vote.

A law graduate at the University of Athens, she is the youngest ever Greek Parliament speaker and the second woman to the appointed to the role.

She is an internationally-renowned human rights lawyer and an anti-corruption activist.
