Visiting Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras agreed to expand their energy and business cooperation, most notably through their trilateral cooperation with Cyprus in delineating the Greece-Egypt Exclusive Economic Zones, as was done already between Cyprus and Egypt.

The third Cyprus-Egypt-Greece conference on EEZ and energy cooperation will take place tomorrow, and the two leaders underlined that the trilateral cooperation is not geared against Turkey, which has long acted to impede Greece from reaching such deals with its neighbours.

Tsipras said that Sisis¨s visit inaugurates a new era of cooperation that will be a catalyst for positive developments in the broader region. He noted that the new cooperation is another step toward making Greece a major hub of Southeastern Mediterranean energy routes in the future.

Shipping is clearly an aspect of that new role, highlighted in the decision to link the Greek ports of Kavala with the Egyptian port of Alexandria and of Alexandroupolis with the Egyptian port of Damietta.

Ports, tourism and business were the three areas of entrepreneurial cooperation discussed at length in bilateral talks.

Tsipras denied there have been delays in delineating the EEZ with Egypt, and said Athens is determined to pursue all prospects for energy exploitation and business cooperation, including having Greek construction companies undertake projects near the Suez Canal project.

Tsipras said the Cyprus-Egypt-Greece cooperation is an anchor of stability in the boiling Middle East region, and that this includes information sharing in the combating of terrorism.

Greece and Egypt will set up bilateral committees of their respective ministries of defense and public order to cooperate in combating terrorism.

The leaders underlined Greece-Egypt cooperation in international organizations, with Greece supporting Egypt in the EU and Egypt supporting Greece in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
