Eva Kaili, the spokesperson for the junior coalition partner, PASOK, left open the possibility that the center left party may be willing to cooperate with the leftist SYRIZA following the elections.
Speaking to the VIMA news outlet, she said that a PASOK - SYRIZA partnership, “could happen on the basis that we remain in Europe and on the basis that specific actions would be taken to keep the country on a European trajectory.”
While SYRIZA is favoured to win the elections on the 25th of January it will struggle to obtain an outright majority. As such it will likely need to partner with one or more of the smaller parties in order to form a government. Realistically the possible candidates for such a collaboration are the once mighty center-left PASOK, the centrist newcomer The River or George Papandreou’s new party, the Democratic Socialist Movement.
Currently PASOK and The River are polling at about 5% and vying for third place in the elections with the neo-fascist Golden Dawn. According to the first polls to include Papandreou’s party, it is polling at about 2.5% and is at risk of not meeting the 3% threshold to make it into parliament.
Speaking about Papandreou’s move to break away from the party his father founded only three weeks before the elections, Ms Kaili said that it had saddened all of PASOK. “It happened without a clear political reason. There is no political difference,” she said. "There have been many mistakes and we did not get here by accident, but it is easy to see that there has been a shouldering of responsibilities which is very difficult and has not been done by many – they haven’t achieved it. When the Democratic Left did it, they disappeared shortly afterwards. The same with LAOS. Already PASOK has contracted greatly electorally because it took part in a government without many of us agreeing or choosing it – that is the MPs – but because it was necessary for the country to be governed.”
