Where there is massive cigarette smoking, cancer usually follows. It's a fundamental truth, which in the case of Greek male cancer gives the country a sad European lead. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) official report, the country is leading the European pack in cases of male lung cancer cases.
That's no surprise in a country where 63% of minors are regular smokers. Greece is one of the few developed countries where lung cancer cases are so high. As a matter of fact, Greece and Romania are the two European countries with the most cases.
The report, compiled by the International Cancer Research Service of the WHO finds elevated numbers of cervical cancer cases and urges women to get themselves inoculated for HPV, which leads to cervical cancer.
Smoking is the biggest threat when it comes to cancer, but it's not the only one. Other threats cpme from malnutrition and communicable diseases, which are preventable. The HPV virus is responsible for 100% of cervical cancer cases and can be prevented via inoculation.
PAP smear test can detect cancer in an early stage and cure it. In 2013, only 33% of women got inoculated for HPV. Experts say that in order for a satisfactory level of immunity to be created in the populace, at least 70% of girls aged 12 to 14 should get covered.
Concerning geographical data, the cities of Drama and Kilkis in the northeast of the country and Karditsa and Grevena in central Greece have the highest cancer mortality rates, according to the Greek Statistical Service, ELSTAT.
As for the most common types of cancer in the country, those are lung, prostate and bladder for men, with breast, colon and lung for women.
