Kikos Martinos is the son of Andreas and Alexandra Martinou, one of the best known shipping families of Greece.
This handsome young man, attracted the lights of publicity when he married in London the beautiful daughter of shipowner Giorgos Livanos, Marina.
Many may remember the also glamorous christening of the their beloved son, Andreas in the small private island the Livanos family owns outside Spetses, Koronida.
However, we must admit that they don't attract publicity, since they choose not to be very social.
His mother, Alexandra, is the vice-president of the Union “Mazi gia to Paidi” and is well known for her philanthropies especially to children. His ant, Georgia Martinou ( the daughter of Andreas Livanos, Thanassis) is also well known, since she is politician (a New Democracy Party MP).
The story of the family is like a fairytale...
Kikos' grandfather, Giannis Martinos, was the greatest antique shop owner in after-war Athens. He used to have one of the most famous antique shop in Pandrosou Street in the area of Monastiraki. The nickname of his antique shop was “the cave of Alladin”, since it was the source of very good income for that time.
His wife, Athena, ancestor of the Methenitis family, a shipwoners' family daughter, married Giannis Martinos.
That is when his involvement with shipping began.
In the late 1960's they founded the well known Thenamaris shipping company, that has ever since grew to bring to the family a fortune many wished to have.
Athena and Giannis Martinos gave birth to three sons and a daughter, Thanassis, Konstantinos (Ntinos), Andreas and Helen. The boys joined their father in the shipping company, while Helen decided to keep and preserve the job of her father, the antique shop in Monastiraki.
Head of Thenamaris company was Athena Martinou, until she decided to pass it on to her son. In 1991, Thanassis Martinos decides to leave the family group. He founded Eastern Mediterannean (EastMed) company. Andreas, just a few years later, also decided to leave Thenamaris to his brother Konstantinos (Ntinos) and creates his own shipping giant, Minerva Marine (from the latin name of Athena, Minerva, in honor of his mother).
All companies are very active and established in tanker ships.
The story of the Livanos family is another fairytale...
Giorgos Livanos, who recently died at the age of 71, was the youngest son of Panagiotis Livanos. The family left Chios island during World War II and went to New Orleans in the USA. As soon as he reached the States, due to the fact that his mother was American, he joined the US Army and fought during during the War at the Pacific.
Then he married the daughter of well-established shipowner Ioannis Karras, Foteini and began his career in shipping, that reached at the beginning of the 1990s to count more than 110 ships, especially libretti ships all carrying a Greek flag.
Kikos Martinos' wife, Marina Livanou-Martinou, is following the initial career of the family she got married to! She owns the gallery Gagosian, in Merlin Street, the area of Kolonaki in central Athens, which is very known for the unique art it exhibits.
