Three American tourists and a Greek were seriously wounded during the Resurrection services by homemade fireworks tossed towards them in the courtyard of the Church of the Holy Virgin of the Akathistos Hymn, at Oia on Santorini.
The three US tourists, aged 51, 53, and 54, and the 50 year old Greek were wounded along with a 23 old Greek and two young Cypriots. The US citizens and the 50 year old were taken to the island surgery and were later flown to Crete aboard a private plane. The Greek man seems to have suffered eye trauma.
The makeshift firecracker contained gunpowder and compressed paper as well as plastic bags and string. The explosion sent the fragments as well as stones from the ground hurling at the hapless audience, wounding the seven people.
