The inquest into the suspicious death of inmate Ili Kareli has led the prosecutor to issue, so far, eight warrants against prison guards at the prison in Nigrita, Serres prefecture, while the guards at Malandrino prison are also being put under scrutiny.

The 42 year old Kareli, had been transported to Nigrita prison after killing a guard at Malandrino. There he was placed in a CCTV monitored cell, but was found dead later. The coroner found that the deceased had been brutally beaten and a heavy blow to the chest was the cause death, as it a collapse of the thoracic cavity caused heart failure .

So far, one guard has admitted to beating Kareli, as confirmed by the ministry of justice. According to sources Kareli had been taken to an unmonitored room and beaten, after his arrival, and then taken to the cell with the CCTV.

As comes out of testimony of the police officers from Itea precinct, the officers handed over the prisoner to a group of prison guards that made him “run the gauntlet,” suffering blows as he made his way down a corridor, but which were not severe. They then lost contact of the prisoner, and left after completing the transfer.

The officers were asked to identify the guards they handed the prisoners to from photos. The prison guards took pictures of him to make it out like they actually received Kareli already beaten, while after the beating which precipitated his demise he was put in the monitored room to allay suspicions.

Police sources that spoke to TheTOC.gr, yesterday afternoon stressed that no one is exempt from scrutiny, while they stressed that the prisoner remained in another area for 2.5 hours before being taken to the monitored cell. The same sources also noted that the video and the photos are not proof of anyone's innocence.

The Amfissa prosecutor has opened a case against persons responsible, and issued warrants against specific guards for three felonies: torture, torture resulting in death, and physical abuse aiming at heavy bodily harm. Apart from the guards at the two prisons the prosecutor is also investigating police personnel at the Itea police precinct.
