Olympiacos beat their chief rivals Panthinaikos yesterday in Greece’s version of ‘el clasico’. In a match that was short on quality but long on history, Olympiacos managed to squeak ahead with a goal in the 58th minute. It is the first time that the two teams have met this year in the Greek Super League
Tasos Avlonitis came on as a substitution for the reds in the 57th minute and only a minute later put his seal on the match after heading in a foul struck by Alejandro Dominguez. The foul had been picked up earlier by Ibrahim Afellay, who was one of the stand out players of the match.
However the match had little other to offer by way of quality play. Olympiacos dominated possession but repeatedly came up short against Panathinaikos’s well organized defense.
Kostas Mitroglou had a golden opportunity to shut out the match in the 80th minute when he drew a penalty from Panathinaikos goalie Steele who also received a yellow card from apparently tripping the forward up in the penalty area. However Steele managed to get his hands on the weakly struck shot.
Alafouzos: the result was distorted
The grudge between the two rivals only deepened after the match when Panathinaikos owner, Yiannis Alafouzos blamed corrupt officiating for skewing the match in Olympiacos’s favour in statements following the game.
“The result was distorted,” Mr Alafouzos said, “Olympiacos is incapable of winning without nannying. We were aiming to move forward with revelations about the refereeing but we didn’t do it in order not to make the atmosphere more explosive.”
“The officials and their attitude play a role in this life. Olympiacos is an average team and if they didn’t have the help of the referees, we would have stepped on them like last year.”
Mr Alafouzos even named the government as culpable saying that it was unacceptable that it tolerated a situation where Olypiacos consistently interferes with the refereeing.
