Last night a break-in was reported at the home of Pavlos Haikalis, the parliamentarian with the Independent Greeks party who caused an uproar recently over allegations of an attempt to bribe him so that he would vote in favour of the President of the Republic.
According to reports, the perpetrators seized jewels, two watches and the service gun of Haikalis’s wife, who is a police officer and the MP’s official bodyguard.
There is no indication at this point that the burglary is related to Haikalis’s bribery allegations which were ultimately discounted as baseless by prosecutors.
According to a high ranking police official, the robbers used a ladder to reach a balcony on the 1st floor of Haikalis’s three-story home in Rafina, shortly after 22.30 last night. They managed to gain entry to the house through the unlocked balcony door.
The MP and his wife were at home at the time on the ground floor but did not realize that the burglars had entered their home until later.
Police sources say that aside from the jewelry and valuables, the robbers also seized Haikalis’s wife’s service weapon. Mrs Haikalis is a sergeant major in the VIP protection squad with the Greek police. She has been tasked with the protection of Pavlos Haikalis himself.
Forensics teams were dispatched to the parliamentarian’s home searching for fingerprints or genetic material from the robbers, while police officers are searching for security cameras in the area that may have recorded the burglars.
