The information about the man who allegedly attempted to bribe Independent Greeks MP Pavlos Chaikalis was offered by party chairman Panos Kammenos in a press conference about the issue earlier today. He didn't name him, but offered a lot of evidence about his identity.
His name is Giorgos Apostolopoulos and Kammenos first met him in the office of New Democracy president (and now PM) Antonis Samaras, when Kammenos was still a ND party MP. Apostolopoulos at the time claimed to be working for German Deustche Bank and, according to Kammenos, he was introduced to the man by close Samaras associate, Dimitris Stamatis.
According to Kammenos, Apostolopoulos had intimate knowledge of the CDS case, so much so, that he was in a position to testify in the case. When Kammenos left New Democracy to form his own party (Independent Greeks), Apostolopoulos stated he would follow him to the new party.
At the time, Apostolopoulos was corresponding political pieces online, using the nickname "Deucalion". Kammenos claims that Apostolopoulos was acting as an unofficial confidante of his. "I trusted him and he was offering me advice", said Kammenos in the press conference.
Apostolopoulos has at times stated that he was a councilor for Samaras, PM George Papandreou and former Fin Min Giorgos Papakonstandinou, who stands on trial for the misuse of the so called "Lagarde List", which contained the names of wealthy Greeks with foreign assets, who have been eluding taxation in Greece.
It is obvious that the case is as confusing as it gets, and there will be many more chapters until it gets cleared - if ever.
