Martin Schulz, the President of the European Parliament has expressed the conviction that Alexis Tsipras will not manage to find enough support to achieve a haircut on Greek debt, and therefore will not be able to uphold his pre-election commitments.

According to reporting by Deutsche Welle, Schulz told Alexis Tsipras as much when he spoke to him over the phone last night to offer his congratulations on his electoral victory.

The news outlet was reporting statements made today by Schulz to the German radio station Deutschlandfunk.

Schulz stated that he did not expect there to be any ‘haircut’ on Greek debt as he did not believe that there would be enough international support for such a step.

However when discussing the potential for Alexis Tsipras to cooperate with Greece’s European lenders, Schulz sounded a note of optimism stating that Tsipras, was “ia pragmatist, who knows that he will have to proceed towards compromises.”
