The Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the junior coalition partner PASOK made waves today by seemingly hinting at early elections.
Venizelos made the comments in Basel Switzerland where he is attending a conference at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
Referring to the stalled negotiations with the troika over the final review of the bailout programme Venizelos said, “The necessary guarantees will be given, provided it is the will of the people.” The comment is perceived as leaving open the possibility of early elections.
Venizelos’s comments in full:
“Every Greek citizen wonders, and fairly, why there is such a tough and hard negotiation – where is the sticking point? Why does a country such as Greece - which after five years of sacrifices now posts primary surpluses, positive growth rates, and a powerful banking system – have difficulty formalizing the exit from the Programme and the transfer to a new phase, without the Memorandum and the Troika?
The question is why do our partners have reservations about leaving us without a Memorandum and strict oversight. What is it that they don’t trust? It is obvious that the reason is deeply political. When there is an opposition which proposes things which may lead to a derailment – not of Europe – of Greece and lead to a loss of the achievements in only a few days it is logical for there to be reservations and a hardening in order for the necessary guarantees
The necessary guarantees will be given, provided it is the will of the people. Because we act in the name of the Greek people and must have the power, must have the domestic support in order to impose the truth. The truth says that Greece meets all of the requirements allowing it to exit the Programme, from the Memorandum and Troika and to pass to a new era of seriousness, responsibility and compatibility with other European countries on an even base.”
